Halloween at Scavenger Escape Rooms
Spooky cool surprises are waiting for you :-)
Halloween has become one of the most popular autumn celebrations. Around the world, it is linked to costumes, pumpkin carving, and collecting sweets and treats. But where does this special tradition come from? And how can you celebrate it this year in Salzburg with a truly unique program?
👻 The origins of Halloween
The roots of Halloween go back more than 2,000 years. The ancient Celts celebrated Samhain at the end of October, marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter. They believed that on October 31, the dividing line between the world of the living and the dead became thin, and spirits could return to earth.
The Celts lit huge bonfires, wore costumes made of animal skins, and performed rituals to ward off evil spirits. From these traditions came the modern practice of dressing up in costumes. 🔥🎭
🍏 Roman and Christian influence
During Roman rule, two festivals merged with Samhain:
-Feralia, a day to honor the dead,
- and Pomona’s Day, celebrating the goddess of fruits and trees.
Pomona’s symbol was the apple – this may be the origin of the well-known apple-bobbing game. 🍎 As Christianity spread, the church sought to replace pagan traditions with Christian holidays. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day. The evening before became known as “All Hallows’ Eve,” which eventually turned into “Halloween.”
🎃 Halloween in America and the modern era
In the 19th century, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween to the United States, where it became a mass celebration. Pumpkin carving (Jack-o’-Lanterns), “Trick or Treat,” and large costume parties all started there.
Today, Halloween is celebrated worldwide: both children and adults enjoy it as a day filled with community, playful scares, and spooky fun. 🍬
